Happy 4th of July!

Mervyn's Shopping Spree
Saturday
July 28, 2007
Ready, set, let's go shopping! This year's Mervyn's Shopping Spree was on Saturday, July 28th. Westchester Rotary, partnering with Mervyn's, LAX Kiwanis and Playa Sunrise Rotary, took children from low-income families shopping (some of these children have never had anything new to wear). Mervyn's opened their doors very early for this exclusive shopping spree, and we got to take the children shopping (who doesn't like to shop?). Mervyn's matched our contributions and then offered GREAT DISCOUNTS in addition, so each child got new clothes/shoes with a total value of approximately $265.

OUR LITERACY PROGRAM
Our club has been participating in "The Literacy Program" to continue and expand the popular "Read To Me" program which benfits the children by giving them a positive role model and also benefits the participating Rotarians. We have the opportunity to connect wtih children by sharing a little about ourselves with enthusiastic group while helping them to realize the importance and enjoyment of reading. And we also provide book donations. This year we read to the first graders at eight different schools with 18 volunteers.

Math Tutoring Program
Westchester Rotary re-started a math-tutoring program for the school year 2006-2007 at the Loyola Village School. The program started in October once the teachers had identified those students that need more help in math. The format is a one on one to up to four students at a time dependent on the teacher’s needs. The identified student(s) in rotating groups leave the classroom with the tutor for up to one and one half hour. Twelve Rotarians are active tutors and most will work the remainder of the school year.
At the start of the program those interested met the school math coach. At that time the coach brought us up to date on the latest math-teaching format (the new math). We tutor 4th or 5th students and are supplied math games and other means to make the lesson go on and have fun! |

District 5280 BEACH CLEAN-UP
Our Club helped to make Dockweiler Beach Cleanup a resounding success. We had over 100 volunteers from three Rotary Clubs, three Interact Clubs, and a fantastic middle school, combined with good citizens from all of our communties, working together for the betterment of our beaches. Congratulations to Jennifer and Edgar for a great job. |

NEW ZEALAND STUDENTS ARRIVE
31 New Zealand students plus 2 chaperones flew into LAX in mid-January 2007. Our Rotary started this program approxmately 23 years ago and this year thanks to Warren Bobrow and Val Velasco everything ran smoothly. The students stop here every year on the way to their host cities and countries for a year of study.
We hosted the students at the Playa Vista Community Center for dinner with the best turnout of Rotarians and guests ever. The food was great, in fact one of the students said it was the best American food she has had since she arrived!
Again special thank to Warren and Val.
