Mervyn's Shopping Spree
Saturday
July 28, 2007

Ready, set, let's go shopping! This year's Mervyn's Shopping Spree was on Saturday, July 28th. Westchester Rotary, partnering with Mervyn's, LAX Kiwanis and Playa Sunrise Rotary, took children from low-income families shopping (some of these children have never had anything new to wear). Mervyn's opened their doors very early for this exclusive shopping spree, and we got to take the children shopping (who doesn't like to shop?). Mervyn's matched our contributions and then offered GREAT DISCOUNTS in addition, so each child got new clothes/shoes with a total value of approximately $265. The above picture is from this year's shopping spree (more pictures are shown on the News page).
Pageant of the Masters
"Young at Heart"

(I must confess, I did not take the photos on display at this Art Show!)

‘Young at Heart’ and on the go………Westchester Rotarians and friends enjoyed a fun outing to the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters on Friday, July 27, 2007. A big thank you to VIP Tours for generously providing the luxury coach bus which took us to Laguna Beach where everyone enjoyed the art exhibits at Art-a-Fair, dined at Tivoli Too!, and then enjoyed the tableaux vivants of Pageant of the Master under the stars, full moon and even some flurries of snow.
Fashion Show a Great Hit!

Casino Night on March 3rd was the Best Ever
Surfin' 60's Casino Night, was held on Saturday March 3, 2007, 7 p.m. to midnight at the Crown Plaza Hotel on Century Blvd. Most guests came in 1960's dress and everyone enjoyed an excelent dinner, a live band, and Casino games galore! The proceeds benefited the Westchester Rotary Foundation. The reverse drawing of $10,000 was shared by 6 tickets
The Crowne Plaza Hotel again had superb food thanks to Michael Payton, our member and hotel general manager. Cozett Vergari was the Chair and again did an outstanding job.
The Amazing Four-Day Home Makeover
Earlier this year our Club heard about LMU English professor Scott Odom's health problems that left him unable to keep up his Westchester home. The home had suffered while the family focused on his medical problems. Our Club decided to give them a Thanksgiving gift they would never forget. We sent the Odoms on an paid vacation to Disneyland and we rolled up our sleeves. For four days we worked around the clock to spruce up their home. This included major contributions from several vendors. The Odoms returned on Sunday to new paint, new carpet, new kitchen, new landscaping, a new kitchen, new furniture and more. 2007 Booksale a Great Success

Our 52st Annual Westchester Rotary Book Sale was held over Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to everyone who donated and bought books. We will be using the money for local youth and community projects.

Annual Rotary Fashion Show & Employee Luncheon Exceeded all Expectations

The Rotary Club of Westchester held its annual Employee Recognition Day Fashion Show at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 at The Radisson LAX Hotel.
This wasn't a high-brow runway show full of snooty clothing designers. Instead, it was a fun and different way to recognize employees on their special day. The show included a variety of local models, from firefighters to business professionals and featured clothing from Macys, Chico’s and Lucy – all fashion retailers in the Manhattan Village Shopping Center.
The event also included a variety of prizes and gifts for audience members.
All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the LAPD Pacific Division Boosters Association, Los Angeles Fire Department Station No. 95 and the projects of the Westchester Rotary Foundation.

District Conference
The District Conference was very successful for our Club as we were second only to the Wilshire Club as we received 31 awards to their 32. The Mai Tai contest team of Jennifer, Christina and Geoff were also awarded second place, what talent!
